Jon S. Bailey, PhD, BCBA

Dr. Bailey received his PhD from the University of Kansas in 1970 and is currently Professor Emeritus of Psychology at Florida State University where he was on the graduate faculty for 38 years and produced a record 63 PhDs. He is Co-Director of the FSU Panama City Masters Program in Applied Behavior Analysis, recently cited in the New York Times as one of the top applied behavior analysis programs in the country. He is President of Behavior Management Consultants, Inc., is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst, and has been an Expert Witness for the US Department of Justice. Dr. Bailey is a Fellow of the Association for Behavior Analysis International and the American Psychological Association. He is on the Executive Committee of the Association of Professional Behavior Analysts and is Secretary/ Treasurer of the Florida Association for Behavior Analysis, which he founded in 1980. Dr. Bailey has published over 100 peer-reviewed research articles, is a past editor of the Journal of Applied Behavior Analysis, and is coauthor of four recent books: Research Methods in Applied Behavior Analysis, How Dogs Learn, Ethics for Behavior Analysts, and most recently How to Think Like a Behavior Analyst, all co-authored with Dr. Mary Burch. His hobbies include photography, videography, and dog training; he has trained his Welsh Springer Spaniel "Wyn" for both obedience and agility competitions. Wyn has been ranked #1 in the country for his breed in both performance events.

Five Pillars of Professionalism: Infrastructure, Evidence, Ethics, Excellence, Esprit de Corps
The profession of behavior analysis has its roots in the operant conditioning lab, which is a strange place to begin if you want to compete with counseling, clinical psychology, psychotherapy, and clinical social work for the hearts and minds of America. We have not had a foundation for our profession that is grounded in a broader view of what we have to offer parents, teachers, administrators and CEOs as an option to traditional services. I would humbly like to suggest that we begin that exercise by considering five major themes that we can employ to bring out the best in our next generation of professional behavior analysts and compete effectively in the marketplace of ideas.

Jennifer Zarcone is the Director of the Community Consultation Program in the Department of Pediatrics, University of Rochester Medical Center. She is a Board Certified Behavior Analyst and a Licensed Psychologist. She has served for three years on the Executive Committee for the Association for Positive Behavior Support, most recently as President. She is a Member-at-Large on the Board of Directors for New York State Association for Behavior Analysis. Her areas of expertise are in autism, severe behavior disorders, clinical trials, and Prader-Willi syndrome.

Challenging Behavior and Psychotropic Medication: Evidence-Based Practices
The focus of this presentation is on methods that are currently being used to evaluate the behavioral effects of medication for individuals with intellectual disabilities. The initial part of the presentation will describe what has been identified as the ideal guidelines for conducting research studies and then describe how these guidelines may be adapted to non-research settings (e.g., schools, home, residential facilities). The focus of the presentation will be on the most commonly used behavioral measures, including rating scales, direct observation and functional analysis measures. The advantages and disadvantages of each type of measure will be described. Finally, the need for measures of social validity and consumer satisfaction will be discussed.
