Assessing Behavior Disorders: Alternatives to Standard Functional Analysis Procedures
RICHARD G. SMITH, University of North Texas

Functional analysis has been demonstrated to be an effective means of identifying the environmental determinants of a range of behavior problems exhibited by persons with developmental disabilities, However, some limitations of functional analysis procedures have been identified, including substantial investments of time, resources, and expertise, as well as potential risks to participants. Alternative methods for analyzing the operant functions of behavior problems that address these limitations will be presented, including functional analysis of precursor behavior and multiple-respondent anecdotal assessment. Attendees will be able to describe benefits and limitations of standard and alternative functional assessment procedures, ways to validate the effectiveness of alternative procedures, outcomes of recent research on alternative assessment methods, and future directions for research and application of functional assessment.
