In this introductory session, a basic overview of the Health Insurance Portability and Accountability Act (HIPAA), including historical background, an overview of the Privacy and Security Rules, an overview of the Breach Notification Rule, and discussion of other important elements of this sweeping federal privacy law will be provided. This session is designed to familiarize health care organizations and their Business Associates with the basics for understanding HIPAA compliance responsibilities. The changes implemented in the final Omnibus Rule, effective September 23, 2013, will also be discussed. The implications for Business Associates and Subcontractors who create, maintain, receive or transmit Protected Health Information (PHI) on behalf of a covered entity will be explained. Whether HIPAA is new to you or you have been working in this area for some time, this presentation is designed to provide a “refresher” as you consider the compliance strategies necessary to address the changes implemented in the final regulations.
