BASIC FUNCTION

Under the general supervision, collaborates with special education administrators, classroom teachers and other special youth services personnel to develop and implement Behavior Intervention Plans and provide one-on-one and /or group Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) to designated students; and perform related duties as required.

DISTINGUISHING CHARACTERISTICS

The Behavior Intervention Specialist classification is distinguished by the advanced knowledge of Applied Behavior Analysis, and provides training and support to instructional assistants and school site personnel; one-on-one and/or group intensive behavioral intervention services.

Job Description + Responsibilities

GENERAL ESSENTIAL DUTIES

The classification specification does not describe all duties performed by all incumbents within the class. This summary provides examples of typical tasks performed in this classification.

BEHAVIOR MANAGEMENT:

Applies behavior analysis principles and Applied Behavioral Analysis (ABA) techniques which are evidence-based for students exhibiting aggressive behaviors due to their emotional disturbance, ASD, or intellectual disabilities; implements supportive interventions designed to complement the student's Behavior Intervention Plan (BIP); monitors, redirects and modifies student progress regarding inappropriate behaviors and performance; provides overseeing, modeling coaching, and shadowing to experienced Instructional Assistants for the purpose for providing resources and training in implementing ABA programs; consults and collaborates with teachers, program specialists and instructional assistant behavioral support personnel to development specific goals and objectives for students; collects and maintains data on student performance necessary to the development of goals and objectives for students; recommends program modifications based on ongoing data for the purpose of the supervision and instruction of students; utilizes skills as an effective communicator and behaviorist to manage minor concerns and to assure consistency among entire staff; assists other personnel as may be required for the purpose of supporting them in the completion of their work activities; maintains required paperwork including data collection, team communication, therapy hour logs, etc. for the purpose of providing necessary records/materials; assists in facilitating communication between all members of the site team, attend IEP, clinic and other meetings with the school site team; assists with the organization and set up of new classrooms and facilitate acquiring materials and supplies for staff, as needed; assists in the coordination of the Extend School Year program including; applications, interviewing, selecting, and placing ESY classified staff and students.

INSTRUCTIONAL/CLASSROOM SUPPORT:

Implements Applied Behavior Analysis (ABA) in a variety of settings for the purpose of providing appropriate care to students and maintaining an orderly classroom environment; provides supervision regarding student performance, progress, and behavior for the purpose of assisting in evaluation of student's progress and/or implementing student's objective; Facilitates social skills training programs for the purpose of assisting students in training for personal hygiene, taking care of personal needs and developing basic self-sufficiency; consults with classroom teacher in the development of specific goals and objectives for students; Collaborates with teacher to develop and implement behavior plans; collects and maintains data on student performance necessary to the development of goals and objectives for assigned student; implements emergency crisis management techniques.

MINIMUM QUALIFICATIONS

EDUCATION:

Graduation from an accredited college with a Bachelor's degree in applied behavior analysis, psychology, special education, child development, or a related field.

EXPERIENCE:

Minimum of two years of experience providing direct services to students with various developmental disabilities, mental health diagnoses and/or severe behavior problems in a home-based, center-based, and/or educational/social services setting.

LICENCES AND OTHER REQUIREMENTS:

Board Certified Behavior Analyst (BCBA) certification preferred; possession of a valid CPR/First Aid certificate and any other certifications pertaining to this position at time of application and throughout employment. Pass a required pre-employment physical examination. Possession of a valid, appropriate California driver's license and auto insurance at time of appointment and throughout employment in a position in this classification.

Salary, Benefits, + Opportunities

Monthly Salary: $4,670.00 - $6,749.00

Term: 8 hours/11 months

Candidates who are successful in all screening and testing stages will be placed on an eligibility list. Typically, an eligibility list for a classification expires after six (6) months or one (1) year. Candidates on the expired eligibility list are no longer considered for positions within the class. Eligibility lists may be extended beyond one year or expire sooner than one year. Eligibility lists may be merged, in which case candidate ranks may change.

SELECTION PROCESS

Candidates on the eligibility list will be called in rank order to participate in final selection interviews with the hiring manager until three ranks of candidates have accepted the invitation to interview. Ranks may include ties so more than three candidates may be called to interview for one vacancy. Please note that candidates will be removed from the eligibility list for declining the invitation to interview more than three (3) times.

OFFERS OF EMPLOYMENT

Official offers of employment are ONLY made by the Anaheim Union High School District Human Resources, Classified Office. Offers are subject to satisfactory completion of ALL the pre-employment processing including: successful completion of a physical examination, tuberculosis examination, fingerprint clearance by the California Department of Justice, and proof of eligibility to work in the United States.

ADVANCED STEP PLACEMENT

All new regular classified employees shall be paid in accordance with the salary range established for the class to which assigned. Initial placement will normally be the first step of the salary range. However, a new employee may be provided with advanced step placement upon recommendation of the hiring manager and approval by Human Resources based upon:

A) Additional qualifying experience beyond that required for entry into the class.

B) Additional education at the college level when related to the position, beyond the established educational requirements for entry into the class.

C) Difficulty experienced in the recruitment of candidates to meet the vacancy needs in the class.

D) Additional skills or qualifications of the candidate that make them especially qualified for the position.

E) Evidence of currently receiving a salary greater than the first step of the salary for the classification.

Benefits earned by all permanent classified employees:

-Retirement: Classified employees are members of the Public Employees Retirement System (PERS). Employee contribution is 7% of gross earnings.
